Avicii – Wake Me Up (Pete Tong Radio 1 Premiere)
This summer Avicii is set to release new single ‘Wake Me Up!’, the first track to be taken from his hotly anticipated forthcoming album, which is due before the end of the year. The single and album will be released by PRMD and Island Def Jam and distributed via PRMD (pronounced Pyramid), the newly established label that is also home to Cazzette and Henrik B.
Never one to shy away from controversy, the young producer first premiered the new single amidst a selection of material from the album alongside a live band during his set on the main stage at this year’s Ultra Music Festival Miami. Making a bold statement by introducing live instrumentation to one of the biggest dates in the electronic music calendar, this move embodies the spirit of Avicii’s new material, showcasing the endless possibilities of electronic dance music and how brilliantly they can be harnessed.
Retaining the hallmarks of Avicii’s production in its driving beat, rousing arrangements and emotive melodies, the scuffed guitar riff adds layers to the rhythm section of ‘Wake Me Up!’ while the stirring lead synth riff is complimented by the rich vocals and storytelling lyrics.
The new single is the next evolution in a whirlwind few years for Avicii that have seen him ascend the ranks of dance music at a startling rate and comes off the back of his first official UK chart number 1 single on ‘I Could Be The One’ with Nicky Romero. Never afraid to take on new challenges, he also recently scored the theme music for this year’s Eurovision song contest alongside Bjorn and Benny from ABBA, which was held in Malmo in his native Sweden.
Used to a hectic schedule, this summer looks busy even by Avicii’s standards. Alongside his residency at Ushuaia, Ibiza throughout the season, he will be playing headline slots at the first EDC London and Creamfields in the UK, as well as hosting leading tastemaker Pete Tong’s Radio 1 takeover on 5th July.
